“Larky Bat” for Kult Issue04 – “Fortune”

Recent work submiited for Kult magazine. The female genitalia and anything that is related to it is generally considered bad for FORTUNE in Chinese custom.
We believe Larky Bat might change all that! ( Special Thanks to Steve Lawler )

“Little Mermaid”

This is a painting that I did for a friend. He’s a fisherman, and I have this idea that all fisherman love/hate mermaids :P This mermaid is based on John William Waterhouse’s painting of a mermaid in 1901.
The finished piece is 30″x30″, and is acrylic on canvas. I would have preferred to use oils for their richness, but I did not have enough time to wait for it to dry. It would have taken several sessions, with one week proper drying time in between sessions…Acrylic is fast drying, and that can be an advantage or disadvantage depending how you see it. Sure you lose out on some of the richness and flexibilty of oils, but what the hey.
I’m looking for advice to share, but all I can say is : pick up that brush and start painting!! :P I learnt a lot through making bad mistakes and good mistakes, and there is no better teacher than practice. All the OIC people I know  (this means you!) are already talented in some way, so acrylic or oils are just new media to manipulate. I’m no master in painting, so if you have tips, please share with me, and if you have any questions, I am happy to share imho :)

of intros and illos

mural work for scoop of art cafe

hi all, thanks for welcoming me into this group. a bit about me: i am a corporate crony by day, vigilante doodler behind wanton doodle by night, with the dark circles to prove it. my doodles are borne out of sheer boredom, the desire to stay awake during mind-numbing meetings and the compulsion to expend office supplies. i doodle on apparel, canvas, home ware, skateboard decks, vinyl toys, unconscious victims and just about anything that doesn’t move when tickled.

Piles of inspiration

Some random, unconnected items from my inspirations folder to share with you all–Noma Bar and his awesome visual puns, Gabriel Moreno’s showstopper drawings, and illustrative title sequences.

First: an Israeli graphic-designer & illustrator hybrid I’m sure most of you have heard about. I apologize if this recc is obvious/redundant, but I thought it’s worth posting for anyone who hadn’t encountered his work before. Noma Bar specializes in deceptively simple imageries that holds multiple meanings. His work especially shines in news editorials, as his ability to translate topical issues into the simplest forms never fail to amaze me. Here’s a few examples.

On Rhetoric.

On Dutch government’s proposed ban on Burkas.

On gun control

On America’s occupation of Iraq and the pursuit of oil.

For a comprehensive view of his work, you can take a look at his portfolio, http://www.dutchuncle.co.uk/illustrators/du/noma-bar.

In a way Gabriel Moreno’s work is the exact opposite of Noma Bar’s–it’s intricate and brimming with crazy amount of details, and is extravagant in its complexity. It’s always nice to see the works in which patience and dedication of the artist is evident. I can get quite lazy myself, so looking at his fruit of labor reminds me to be more meticulous.

Ok, last but not least, The Art of the Title Sequence (http://www.artofthetitle.com/) is a wonderful web archive of exceptional movie opening / closing titles. It covers the making of process and interviews with the studios / creators involved. Really fantastic stuff. Here are two of my faves.

Sorry for the spamalot!

OIC Portrait Day at June 2010

This is the 2nd times I using my water colour this year. The first time was at the Portrait Day at March. After the March portrait day I went to buy a brown ink pen until June I finally got a chance to use it. haha~

Now a days I usually do digital drawing as clients often require a digital files and many changes as many of you knew it. When too use to the Undo function, I’m scared of drawing on a paper with ink but I used to draw with ballpoint pen many years ago.

So that’s the reason of joining the portrait day is to force myself drawing on paper and draw in a limited time. This remind me when I was still in high school, we used to do sketching on the street, rushing home work like water colour painting or oil painting etc. It require very sharp observation and also good skill.

Too much rubbish~ here are the only 2 sketches that I managed to shoot on that day.

The little man above was hard to draw~ I’ve tried 2 times but failed end up I change my position and do a quite sketch of him, a bit rough but I quite like it.

This one was the very last drawing on that day, probably because of I’ve done so many sketches, my hands are warmed up, lines are fine, water colour also in control.
