“Little Mermaid”

This is a painting that I did for a friend. He’s a fisherman, and I have this idea that all fisherman love/hate mermaids :P This mermaid is based on John William Waterhouse’s painting of a mermaid in 1901.
The finished piece is 30″x30″, and is acrylic on canvas. I would have preferred to use oils for their richness, but I did not have enough time to wait for it to dry. It would have taken several sessions, with one week proper drying time in between sessions…Acrylic is fast drying, and that can be an advantage or disadvantage depending how you see it. Sure you lose out on some of the richness and flexibilty of oils, but what the hey.
I’m looking for advice to share, but all I can say is : pick up that brush and start painting!! :P I learnt a lot through making bad mistakes and good mistakes, and there is no better teacher than practice. All the OIC people I know  (this means you!) are already talented in some way, so acrylic or oils are just new media to manipulate. I’m no master in painting, so if you have tips, please share with me, and if you have any questions, I am happy to share imho :)

Anyway I saw this post in your blog, thanks for sharing it here too!! Love the process stages. I always wanted to do something big, I mean paint something big, I mean, something on a bigger canvas…. you have inspired me to do so!!

    To my friend, Don:
You are probably not aware of how inspiring your dedication to sketching and your talent are! :) thank you for your kind words. We shall mutally encourage each other! (I don’t think I’ve held a small brush or pen in a long time, I like things a bit in your face and big, kkkk…also i think my eyes are growing oldflowers, can’t see near and small things so well now! )

    To my friend, Mike:
Thank you for your kind words too. Let’s all enjoy art together. It’s great how OIC brings like-minded people together! :)
