Mindflyer – Illustration for Challenge magazine

This is my new illustration for Challenge magazine. Thanks to MrB for hooking me up with Jasmine and Wei Ping to work on this piece.
This seems to be my favourite kind of work of late- just trying to ink and share my trippy Utopian visions. Really had fun with it and not want to stop! :D

Picture below:

The Process- SanSan’s Bowl of Tuberose

Bowl of Tuberose (the flower is known in mandarin as 晚香玉). 24″ x 24″, acrylic.

It’s based on a photo, but I did not expect flowers and bouquets to be so tricky! :P I visited some art galleries in Ho Chi Min city recently for the first time, and I was so amazed by some of the work of vietnamese artists. I tried to remember as much as I could and had to experiment when I got back. I think the trick is…LAYERING!

BCF with DDB Worldwide, Singapore

Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) Ads

Medium: Kryolan grease paint on skin. Daler Rowney Expression Angle Brushes and Sponge.

Interesting project I was involved in recently. Painting on a LIVE MODEL, graphic style! Interesting paint that doesn’t dry but the challenge is to paint on contoured body skin. It’s tricky but once you get the hang of it, it’s ok. Sketch and idea was confirmed on paper with the creative team. 3 day schedule locked down at Republic Studios because each piece took about half day to complete which includes touch ups on the body paint and photography. This job was really smooth sailing because the creative team really knew what they wanted. Special thanks to the team at DDB Singapore, Republic Studios and the model. This is one of those jobs that you need a team to pull off.

Do email me if you need to know more about the paint and technique. Will try to acquire the process in detail to share with you guys. :)

SKETCHWALK Friday, 27Aug, 6.30pm

Calling all sketchers! OIC and USK is holding a night sketchwalk on August 27, this friday night. Our meeting point will be at  Heartroom Gallery, Block 44 Owen Road, #01-311. Please arrive at 6.30pm for light refreshments hosted by the gallery owner. At around 7.30pm, we will sketch along race course road and hopefully to sketch a chinese opera happening around that time. We will conclude the sketchwalk with a supper meal at 9pm at the hawker center along Owen Rd. Please call Andrew 91070735 or Tia 96968080 if you get lost or need more information. If you are planning on arriving late, please look for us at the opera stage around the area or just call us.

ps: tips for sketching at night: Bring black ink brush or thick marker, a midtone colour (eg. grey, red, blue, or diluted ink. line hatching will also do.), and opaque white (liquid paper or white colour pencil or pen will do. This is extremely helpful for dotting windows or street lamps at night.). Draw a simple outline of what you see. Squint your eyes. See the scene only though those three shades – Black, midtone, and white. And fill in the shapes on paper. Keep it simple.
