My Color Palette
Found this sketch of my color palette box set from W & N Cotman series which I bought when I was in America studying. Cost me quite a bomb too. When I bought it, it was my first time seeing a watercolor box set – I know I am an ignorant artist! I was excited because now I could draw and paint on location without having to bring paint tubes and additional palette. At the same time I bought 3 brush pens so there wouldn’t be a need to carry water bottles too. These inventions are great stuff!
I cam back Singapore to find that this is not available (that was in Dec). But I found Straits Commercial selling individual color cakes by Rembrandt. I only managed to try the colors just recently 8 months later after I bought it. Rembrandt has more brilliancy than Cotman, and the paint dissolves much faster and looks richer! Okay, now my plan is too use up my Cotman and then replace with Rembrandt.
At the mean time… I will sketch more!!

I think its hard to find a minimalist artist- we are all hoarders I guess! I still have stuff I bought and have not used after afew years!
What I do sometimes is I buy afew of my favorite items at a good price ( esp when travelling ) and then give them away to my friends whom I feel can put it to good use- a good eg is the water brush- I have given away 4 or 5 of that .
Hey don’t mind me asking what do you think of Van Gogh brand’s watercolor? I saw them at Straits Commercial they’re a cheaper alternative next to Rembrandt’s.
hi zc, i just started using the mini Van Gough set. its user friendly & good as a first set due to its affordable price. i like that its plastic so its durable, handy & light. They also have a flip chart for you to view the brightness of the colors, ask the shop.. ; ) and u can place it next to rembrandts’ color range chart. The colors are are quite sticky though, so sometimes when i open the palette, it sticks to the cover but its not a problem, i just wondered if its the nature of w/clr paint or its the brand.
other than that, if u r a pro – u might enjoy the expensive & to die for Jap sets for its engineering & quality – casings r very beautiful – in wood/metal – so pretty i will not like to scratch them.
I’ve assumed the more expensive the better quality in terms of brands for art paints..?
Good one Si-Y!!
Very good & thorough feedback!!
VG set looks durable enough to fall many times, yet mini enough to bring ard. haha.
Perhaps other shops local/abroad hv more choices? ..I don’t paint enuf to know all brands. in fact, prob go to CStraits next to ask what’s the cleanest transparent brand to try out. any recommendatn?
zc, my few amatuerish color pieces are done with the VGset – http://si-y.blogspot.com/ hope that helps. its not done on proper w/clr paper though – just a monologue notebk.
