5th Nov 2016 Sat
11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Freelance illustrator Mattias Adolfsson has worked on everything from computer games to children’s books. Using pen, ink, and water colours, his All in line books are one-of-a-kind. Join moderator Chris Shaw who will pick Adolfsson’s brain for insights on how his beautifully detailed tableaux are made. This session will end with a live demonstration.
8:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Illustrators such as Carol Rosetti and Frances Cannon make bold statements about the female body, through illustrations that challenge social constructs of gender, behaviour and identities. Is illustration a viable mode for feminist discourse? What are the strengths and constraints of illustrations of women produced by female illustrators? In this session, female illustrators hold a conversation about the role of a woman artist in contemporary times.
6th Nov 2016 Sun
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
A single panel comic/illustration is an interesting way to tell a story or message. Complex issues can be depicted in lighthearted ways to pique readers’ interests. How do they do it? In this panel, illustrators Mattias Adolfsson and Gemma Correll, and comic artist Jerry Teo, will discuss the unique features of single panel illustrations, and share some of their behind-the-scene processes and challenges.
7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Joined by a special guest from Sweden, this panel will share professional development tips on establishing oneself as an illustrator in the arts and design community and launching a successful career as an illustrator. What are the common pitfalls and typical barriers? How big a role does taking on corporate commissions have to play? Established illustrators Mindflyer, Mattias Adolfsson and Esther Goh share their insights.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Illustration Arts Fest (IAF) is Singapore’s first indie illustration-centric festival! As part of the 10th anniversary of the Organisation of Illustrators Council (OIC Singapore), the Council is teaming up with Singapore Writers Festival (SWF), LASALLE College of the Arts; and East London Comics Arts Festival (ELCAF) and Nobrow Press to present the inaugural IAF, celebrating illustrators and illustration in Asia.
The IAF is focused on originally created content and narratives by independent illustrators who work in styles and art forms which are not commonly seen in Asia. This is distinguished from the more prevalent trend of superheroes, manga and anime themes. The event is supported by players from the Singapore creative community such as Kinetic, Supermama, H55, Underscore, Design Film Festival and Goodstuph.
