IDOLISM X OIC X A CURIOUS TEEPEE

Posted: March 30th, 2011 | Author: Fei | Filed under: event, exhibition | Tags: , , , | Comments Off

Opening Launch: Thursday 5th May 2011, 7.30pm to 9.30pm

A tweed jacket, lobster claw heels, four little white stitches, a red gown…Iconography that has been etched into our psyche wittingly (and unwittingly) through the delirious world of fashion.

For this exhibition, illustrators draw inspiration from these objects of desire and their inventors, creating original artworks in the process. Using different mediums, participating artists include Mindflyer, Mr B, Fleecircus, Sokkuan, Cherie The Mrr, Eeshaun, AnnGee, SanSan, Noreen, Fei, Miel, Annie Tan, Twisstii and Mriz Sidah just to name a few. With varying backgrounds and styles, from political cartoons, to abstract surrealism, several take their first foray into fashion as subject matter.

With the inaugural Singapore Men’s Fashion Week just past and the upcoming Audi Fashion Festival this May, A Curious Teepee and OIC aim to convey another side of fashion, as seen through the eyes and hands of an artist.

All artworks are on display and available for sale till Sunday 22nd May at A Curious Teepee,
12pm to 9pm daily.

JCC presents – Yamaguchi Akira Solo Exhibition “SINGA-PLANET”

Posted: March 8th, 2011 | Author: mindflyer | Filed under: event, exhibition, inspiring | Tags: , , | Comments Off

My first encounter with Mr Yamaguichi’s work was during my 1st trip to Tokyo in 2008. I noticed quite afew of his smaller works all over Tokyo but the piece that really gripped me was the one at Narita airport Terminal 1. I was amused by the clash of the traditional style with a modern twist and the detailing was amazing.

Anitya 1: An experimental performance by The Observatory featuring Andy Yang

Anitya I

An experimental performance by The Observatory

featuring Artist-Illustrator Andy Yang

Earl Lu Gallery

Lasalle College of the Arts

1 McNally Street

24th January – 7:30pm

25th January – 1pm

Performance – 50 minutes

Free Admission

Borrowing from the Buddhist mandala ritual, Singapore art-rock band The Observatory presents Anitya, a performance series exploring the relationship between music and a non-musical art form.

In the first instalment, The Observatory and artist Andy Yang enact this ritual with sound and painting. From start to end, the musicians and the artist search for inter-connectedness and synchronicity. There is no script, no rehearsal, and no grand design. Everything is created instantaneously and destroyed as soon as the point of completion is reached.

Observe how music and art interact. The work of Yang is dynamic and subtle, produced in a manner that places emphasis on the physical act of painting as it connects intuitively with sound. Anitya is about the process, a reflection of the temporal nature of life and art. Experience this mutability in the sounds of The Observatory, arising from a wordless dialogue with the collaborating Artist.

Andy Yang is an artist and professional illustrator who has fervently experimented with mixed media since 2000. He is recognised internationally for his work on advertising campaigns, his latest for the Breast Cancer Foundation causing quite a stir. Andy has shown solo twice in Singapore. Recent exhibitions include well-received tribute shows Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep 2010 and A Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy 2010.

Local band The Observatory has always positioned itself at the vanguard of tearing down barriers between indie rock and high art. From debut album Time of Rebirth (2004) to their latest release Dark Folke (2009), the group has explored different sonic terrains in rock, metal, folk, jazz and electronic music. Known for their atmospheric live performances, The Observatory has had a busy schedule in 2009-2010 performing internationally and locally.

PantoneMyArt: Presenting the Works of 10 Local Artist

Posted: January 8th, 2011 | Author: Mr.B | Filed under: event, exhibition | Tags: , , , , , | Comments Off

Hi Guys, just pimping an upcoming event. Here’s a sneak peek of my contribution.

PantoneMyArt brings together the work of ten Singapore-based artists, who are given the challenge of creating artworks in predominantly one colour that they were individually assigned. Pantone© refers to a proprietary colour matching system, traditionally used in a variety of design and printing industries. In the exhibition context, this colour reference will extend to a wide range of mediums, from painting to digital art.

Hope to see you guys there, peace, B

Local Peranakan-ish flava by mindflyer for Black Design’s “SHIOK!”

Posted: October 20th, 2010 | Author: mindflyer | Filed under: exhibition, portfolio | Tags: , , , , , | 6 Comments »

Here are some illustrations extending the same vibe as the Tang’s anniversary stuff I did in 2002. It’s for the upcoming exhibiton in Japan – “Shiok! A Gastronomy of Singapore Design” by Black Design.

The images are of some of my favourite Nonya kuehs with some crazy colourful settings based on my childhood memories.

I don’t use a colour wheel – I just paint by feel and mood.

Thanks to Jackson, Tanny and the team at Black Design.

Animax x OIC exhibition – Eeshuan and Annie Tan

Posted: October 14th, 2010 | Author: mindflyer | Filed under: event, exhibition | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | 3 Comments »

Special thanks goes out to Animax + Japan Creative Centre + Fourskin for this wonderful collaboration. We hope this project for Animax will set the “pace” and “style” for our future collabs – being drawn together and celebrating the joy and passion for drawing!

Below are small teasers of the 8 A0 size illustrations that will be exhibited.

Eeshaun vs Spooky Kintaro

eeshaun (b. 1980) is a self-taught Singaporean artist and illustrator. Since starting gardensilly in 2005, he has created artworks and illustrations for Adidas, Nike, The Discovery Channel, onedotzero (UK), The Singapore Fashion Festival 2006, Zouk, IdN, Pictoplasma and the San Diego Comic Conference. In 2008, he was commissioned with FARMWORK, Designact and RE:act by Design Council Singapore as curatorial leads to design the Singapore Pavilion, ‘Singapore Supergarden’, for the prestigious 11th Venice Architectural Biennale. His largest public art installation, ‘Move!’, was commissioned by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore in 2009. He teaches at the School of Technology for the Arts in Republic Polytechnic, Singapore.

The Artwork:
The artwork is inspired by Japanese horror artist Shigeru Mizuki, who popularised the horror manga and anime series Gegege No Kitaro and was a master of the ‘yokai’ genre (Japanese supernatural creatures).

Annie vs Paradise Kiss

A Singapore-based illustrator with an aesthetic inclination of everything weird and wonderful, Annie Tan’s works have ranged from fashion, advertisement, documentary and editorial illustrations, as well as character designs and comic strips. It is through her unique graphic interpretation that Annie portrays her bold ideals, making each piece of artwork a deeply personalized commitment to perfection.

The Artwork:
It is a playful rendition of the manga and anime series “Paradise Kiss” through the artist’s eye. Annie uses three of the characters, Caroline, Miwako Sakurada and Isabella, and their stories for composition. The artwork creates a world of Victorian grandeur, with a sense of quirkiness.

Don’t miss the show!! Mark your calendar! and look out for the Tees!
