If you have been checking out our White Frames exhibit, you must have seen- this picture by YJL aka Jian Long.

He shares his process for his latest samurai illustration below
1. Doing a light pencil sketch on the paper first.

2. Next inking it out with a chinese brush, and adding some of the background colours, mixing Chinese ink with watercolour

3.Painting the clothes, some of the armour..

4.Adding even more colour.

5.After finishing it, I realised the initial inked lines were a little faint, so i touched them up a little. Added more blacks to the ground and to the clouds to give the picture more mood, this time mixing prussian blue with chinese ink. Adding more water to Chinese ink gives you lighter values, whereas lesser water would give you a more solid black. However once the ink dries theres a tendency for it look lighter…I touched up some of the darker parts with black watercolor.
You know the super whiz kid in class you hate because he always produce the most kickass work and gets to date the prettiest gals??!!
Zid’s submission piece gives me that feeling nicely!! Looking forward to holding this labour of love in my hands!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TMgmAkVe9Ishort animation
This is a short animation clip that some of the people worked on. It seemed like just a few minutes of animation but there are REAL work involved.. from researching the flats.. to the characters as well as the tone and the colors. These people really worked hard it and I think the results show.Quite proud of it.
Basically, we are telling the story of HDB flats but by weaving in a story of a little boy and his kid sister. Watch it and it’s pretty self explanatory from that point onwards
music is reference track. composed by Tenmon, taken from ‘Voices from a Distant Star’, directed by Makoto Shinkai…
Bowl of Tuberose (the flower is known in mandarin as 晚香玉). 24″ x 24″, acrylic.
It’s based on a photo, but I did not expect flowers and bouquets to be so tricky!
I visited some art galleries in Ho Chi Min city recently for the first time, and I was so amazed by some of the work of vietnamese artists. I tried to remember as much as I could and had to experiment when I got back. I think the trick is…LAYERING!

Medium: Kryolan grease paint on skin. Daler Rowney Expression Angle Brushes and Sponge.
Interesting project I was involved in recently. Painting on a LIVE MODEL, graphic style! Interesting paint that doesn’t dry but the challenge is to paint on contoured body skin. It’s tricky but once you get the hang of it, it’s ok. Sketch and idea was confirmed on paper with the creative team. 3 day schedule locked down at Republic Studios because each piece took about half day to complete which includes touch ups on the body paint and photography. This job was really smooth sailing because the creative team really knew what they wanted. Special thanks to the team at DDB Singapore, Republic Studios and the model. This is one of those jobs that you need a team to pull off.
Do email me if you need to know more about the paint and technique. Will try to acquire the process in detail to share with you guys.

Hello all, here are some useful links to share, a link I got from Drawn.ca

Sei-ji Rakugaki aka James has this unique style to simplify a very complicated scene into something very simple, squiggly, refreshing and “poetic”. So I asked him how he creates his watercolour drawings which he can whip out very quickly.
From Seiji:
- subject matter is the playground downstairs at my flat.
I used my Lamy fountain pen to draw the lines first .
I add in the tones with brush pen.
For the playground, it’s usually primary colors cos it is red/blue yellow plastic.. so i used a highlighter and some magic marker to add it in.
after the piece is done…
i wreck the drawing by pouring brown ink over it and see how it flows..
—
mf: I like the “wreck”ing part ( I may even try it !
)…. must try it someday!
