Seiji’s Sketch technique

Posted: August 5th, 2010 | Author: mindflyer | Filed under: inspiring, sketch, sketchwalk | Tags: , , , , , , , , | 3 Comments »

Sei-ji Rakugaki aka James has this unique style to simplify a very complicated scene into something very simple, squiggly, refreshing and “poetic”. So I asked him how he creates his watercolour drawings which he can whip out very quickly.

From Seiji:
- subject matter is the playground downstairs at my flat.

I used my Lamy fountain pen to draw the lines first .
I add in the tones with brush pen.
For the playground, it’s usually primary colors cos it is red/blue yellow plastic.. so i used a highlighter and some magic marker to add it in.
after the piece is done…
i wreck the drawing by pouring brown ink over it and see how it flows..

mf: I like the “wreck”ing part ( I may even try it ! :D )…. must try it someday!

SKETCH WALK MAY 29th, SATURDAY. 9 to 11.30AM

Posted: May 26th, 2010 | Author: drewscape | Filed under: event, sketchwalk | 2 Comments »

Sketchwalk for the month of May will be held at Ghim Moh wet market/hawker center. On saturday mornings, it is bustling with people buying their groceries, eating breakfast and selling goods from small makeshift stalls. This old market/hawker place might not be around too much longer so this is a good opportunity to draw it before it is torn down and turned into a modern hawker center. Breakfast can be eaten in between drawing.

To join us, simply meet us at Bouna Vista mrt control station at 9am. We will then begin walking to the market at 9am sharp. If you can’t find us, call Andrew at 91070735.

Alternatively, Tia and friends invite you to join them as they do wood firing and sketching at the Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle, Boon Lay area. 6pm till late. Vesak Day (Friday) There will be a BBQ too (contribution of $5). Please contact Tia at 96968080 for more info. Directions: drop at Boon Lay MRT station, take a bus 199 to Jalan Bahar, walk in along the kampong tarmac road.. lots to sketch along the way, big and small trucks, motorcycles and cars, trees and plants…. Then about 10 mins, you will see the very interesting gate…..and POTTERY JUNGLE!!!

SKETCHWALK 24th April, 6-9pm – GEYLANG

Posted: April 19th, 2010 | Author: drewscape | Filed under: sketchwalk | 6 Comments »

The upcoming sketchwalk will cover the colourful geylang stretch where there are durian stalls and many busy eateries. We will meet at Kallang MRT station at 6pm and start walking off at 6pm sharp. Then we will move on down the road toward Aljunied MRT station. At 7pm, we will break for dinner at a coffeeshop with good food (you may also find your own food depending on your preferences.) Then we will continue the sketchwalk as a NIGHT sketchwalk. For sketching at night, there will be more dark areas interspersed with colourful bright areas, so do bring black markers or inkbrushes that can colour black spaces fast. We will conclude our sketchwalk at 9pm at Aljunied MRT station. Please call 91070735 if you can’t find us on that day. No need to sign up, just show up on that day.

ps: It is adviseable for female sketches to dress with longer pants and less revealing shirts to avoid being scanned by uncles:) But we will stay away from the sleazy areas nonetheless.

Here are photos from the sketchwalk last Saturday. We started off at City Square Mall’s Toastbox, wandered around little india’s back lanes, breaked for tea and prata, drew pigeons, drew people setting up stalls at sungei road, and ended up eating laksa at Jln Besar at Tia’s recommendation. It was rather amusing seeing sketchers lined at the side of the road. We attracted many curious uncles. More photos from Carol can be viewed here.
