“Monsters, Miracles & Mayonnaise” – new graphic novel by drewscape.

This book is a collection of my best short stories compiled over the last 2 years. Story length range from 37 pages to single page comics. 176 pages in total. Most stories are in full colour too. There are some stories that are surreal fantasy while others are memories from my own life experiences. The one thing they have in common is that the stories are all strange, just the way I like my stories. Out of the 13 stories, 5 of them are from my older handmade book, but this time in color. The main bulk of the stories have never been released before so it’s still a good buy even if you have my older books. Because of my love for art tools of all kinds, I could not help but explore different drawing styles throughout this collection. So in a way, it’s like a comic anthology (like Flight) but it’s all created by one author, me! Haha.

Why the name Monsters, Miracles and Mayonaise? There be monsters in it, like those disgusing cockroaches! Monsters, all of them! Spraaaaaay. There be miracles. Like the time where the water in my water bottle suddenly turned into Ribena. True story. And there will be Mayonaise making an appearance in it, because I like mayonaise.

Here are some sample pages.

If you are in Singapore, you can get this graphic novel at Kinokuniya, BooksActually (in Tiong Bahru), Wood in the books (Millenia Walk) and other major bookstores(sooner or later). You can also purchase it directly from the Epigram Books. If you are overseas, you will be able to get it from Amazon.

One hundred trolls

Pigment ink. 135 gsm drawing block.

Stupendous troll, cave troll and three-headed troll. The originals can be found at the One Hundred Trolls blog. This blog is conceived as a thought experiment, a creative exchange for ideas where a hundred trolls of different forms would be envisioned and rendered. From the Wikipedia entry on the mythical being: "In Old Norse sources, beings described as trolls dwell in isolated rocks, mountains, or caves, live together in small family units, and are rarely helpful to human beings.

Making of CLEAR Campaign

Hi Guys, I got some request on my process of creating a character. I tot of doing a simple show and tell.

First off, after getting a brief, I would usually create a series of loose sketches. It’s for me to get the feel and look of the campaign as well as to look into the kind of clothings being donned on the character. Pose is also another key factor as well as some gadgets depending on the setting.

Facial Expression / Head Studies

Adding some gadgets

Costumes approved. Pose studies

Final Confirmation from clients.

OK. Now for the coloring. Basically it’s done in 6 steps. From a sketch to a refined sketch. Flat colors. Add shadow. Detailing and more fine tuning. It’s the same process as THIS.

Progress

P>S: the main thing is always understand the reflectivity of flesh as compared to other materials. Basic 3D lightning fundamentals does apply to digital painting as well : ) peace, B

Sketchwalk this saturday

For this month’s sketchwalk, we will be meeting at Kampong Glam Cafe at 930am. You may have your breakfast and teh halia there or at neighbouring cafes. You may spread out in any direction you like but return to the Kampong Glam Cafe at 12.30pm for show and tell. To get there, you could get off at Bugis MRT station, walk up towards Raffles hospital, cross the road diagonally toward the Arab Street/Kampong Glam area. Some highlights are the Sultan Mosque, textile shops, Haji lane, and laid-back coffeeshops. More on Arab street here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g294265-d324757-Reviews-Arab_Street-Singapore.html

See you there!
