Sometimes simplicity is better. And sometimes simplicity is not so simple. Discovering this guy has really helped shaped up my work a lot.

Possibly the oldest living illustrator with a connection to Singapore

Ronald Searle is 90!! This is another of my illustration heroes.

Did you know he was a POW in SIngapore during WW2? He did a whole series of drawings  while in prison here.

Most inspiring thing about him to me is:

1. He’s still doing “IT” at 90 ( “IT” being “illustration” )

2. His studio is in France!! ( Like my other hero- Robert Crumbs )

3. He never stopped drawing! During his stint as a POW/ artist- he trade cigarettes for drawing paper!!

“He never stopped drawing, despite beatings, bouts of malaria and beri beri, and a Japanese guard’s pick axe in the back.” (quoted from Ronald Searle Biography http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/searle.htm )

Extraordinary story of Ion Barladeanu- from tramp to artist

There is an interesting story about Ion Barladeanu- a 63 yr old Romanian tramp whose amazing collages were discovered by a gallery via a stranger/ artist who happen to meet sieving through the same rubbish heap.

Using what he has- alot of trashed magazines and his imagination- he amassed about 1,800 over pieces of collage over the years, with himself being the chief audience.

I love this quote “”If I were reincarnated in another life I would still be making collages, and if I could take them to the moon I would.”

How many of us are so sure of our passion for our work?! Note to self- use what I have and never say die.

The BBC program can be heard here about the documentary film made about this artisit:
