Portraits of children and their aspirations

Late last year, we were commissioned by a charity to produce some portraits for the Trans Centre (a non-profit organisation for children from broken homes.)

The aim of the project was to help the children envision what they would like to be in future and drawing a portrait of them in their “dream role” to motivate them. The portraits were then presented to the children as small part of an aid package.

This is the 1st time we produce so many portraits based on photos and some verbal description of the kid’s personalities. We prefer to draw from life and in person.
Mindflyer was in charge of liaison and co-ordination ( esp since there are 5 of us involved- we have to set a size and format template to ensure consistency )

Those who participated  also include-  AnnGee,  Shyam, SanSan and Twisstii.
Special thanks to Wei Wei Yeo ( The National Art Gallery, Singapore )  for the introduction and recommendation .

HP TouchPad launch/ OIC Portraits After Dark @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel

We were invited to the special event for HP’s TouchPad launch at the Klapsons The Boutique Hotel on 26th July. Due to the smaller space allocated to us – we have to be very selective and handpick 12 “spartans”/artists to show the crowd what a portrait event by OIC is all about!
We had a wonderful time pleasing the crowd! First time we had such an intense 1 to 1 kind of session and we were very pleased that even our new comers Xin Nie and Sharon took the challenge very well! There were also many queries about OIC and what we do.
We hope to do more such sessions especially with brands like HP that believes in giving local talents opprotunities to shine.
Thanks to Hsu Wei and the HP team, Pat Law and the GoodStuph crew , Edelman, PMG Asia and of course our specially handpicked team from OIC that make this event fun and memorable!

Look Ma, No Gun !

My first detailed (so-called) caricature :)

It’s all started just because of Great Artist Jason Seiler’s (http://jasonseilerillustration.blogspot.com) caricature of Gaddafi..saw it on facebook and thought i should try it too..
just searched Gaddafi’s photos in Google and stared working on my first caricature..i didnt want to paint his body because i had no idea about the concept yet..so started refining his face..i was thinking about Gaddafi’s caricature even at work, traveling, doing other things..this was never happened to me before..damn Gadaffi…i was possessed by him :P
so suddenly i thought about Machete’s poster..BINGO ! i was like..YESS ! and you can see what i did :)
i tried to show him stupid and funny at the same time..that’s why i added a fork, spoon, butter knife & scissors…as you all know about his nature,  i painted that “I love me” text on his underwear..and a pack man ghost to add some more personality ;)
Thanks to Jason Seiler for the inspiration !
hope you enjoy this…please feel to free give any kind of feedback/critique/comment :)

here are some details, wip images and ref. images !

Shyam’s Sorcerer From Hell

This were stills drawn for a new documentary from Crime & Investigation Network about an evil sorcerer called “Sorcerer From Hell” – Ahmad Suradji, an Indonesian serial killer who murdered 42 women in ritual slayings.

Afew references were given – eg the photo of the killer and some background info on the setting. The rest were all imagined and made interesting by the artist.
The required style was supposed to be based on something with a FILM NOIR influence with dramatic lighting.
The task was to produce a series of layered stills that can be produced as animatics to supplement the other material in the documentary in a sketchy storyboard-ish style.

All drawings were executed by myself with some art direction and co-ordination from Mindflyer.  Special thanks to Bull’s Eye Films for this interesting project.

The Process – Love Is In The Air

Hi there everyone…I would like to share one of my painting’s processes with all of you.

So let’s start!

1. Concept: I was just thinking to draw something wild, adventurous…so came up with the idea of kissing lovers in the air, was laughing on my own idea :P so this is the first doodle I made.

2. Drawing & Composition: It’s time draw details…the dress code of the lovers, their vehicles & the city structure. If you are wondering about those sinister buildings then it’s intentional..yes, to show the bravery of the lover, I just wanted to add more drama in the whole composition, it also depicts that these two lovers are so passionate about each other that they don’t really care about the consequences of their Kiss.

Since I wanted to show something Futuristic yet ancient (sounds silly I know!) to make it more clear, I would like to say more about the culture I was looking for…

this city is somewhere above the sky and they are living there from ages… I tried to show more organic feel, like it’s made with natural stuff. Check out the overlay building’s roof.

As u can see, I’ve added few elements (Overlay) to add more depth. I wasn’t sure about the colour scheme till this moment.

3. Colour scheme: Since its going to be an ancient fantasy…I thought about Golden Yellow scheme.

So I created a new layer and filled Golden Yellow and tried the blending mode options. It’s a great option to achieve harmony in the artwork. Sometimes you can get lots of unexpected and beautiful effects

through this feature. I think most of the people are already aware about that. So as u can see here the look and feel is changed due to the blending mode adjustment. Now I started adding details in overall composition.

Sometimes I don’t follow the ideal process and work on different area at the same time. To show the depth of field, I made the foreground elements blurry

using Gaussian Blur filter. So I suggest working with lots of layers, so that we can tweak each layer separately without spoiling the whole artwork.

4. Background: Background was almost merging with the characters…so added light pink colour on a separate layer to add more depth in the background. So the character will come out.

5. I think we should take a break and see the same work once again after some period of time. After looking at this artwork after few days, I realized that the composition was too tight for the subject.

So I made few changes… minimized the character’s sizes and flipped entire canvas.

It was looking better than before…then started working on the details. I chose Calligraphic Brushes…these Brushes are great for painterly look & feel.

6. Final details and tweaks: I’ve used smooth edge brush around the character to avoid those sharp edges…added clouds and light in the sky. Hope u enjoyed the making. Click the last image to view the final bigger image.

Happy Painting!!
