Ray Toh’s Ideabook 2011

Hi All. I have just published a new book. Ray Toh’s Ideabook 2011. It’s a collection of 200 pages worth of sketches that i have done over the years in the hope to explore and experiment with ideas. The wonderful design is handled by Jasmine from You&Me.  You can drop by Parka’s Blog or Halcyon Realms for a preview on the book.  The book is already on sales in my online store. It’s priced at 32, but i will be selling it at 29.90 during the STGCC event. The event will happens this week , 20 to 21 August at Suntec Singapore. I will be having a booth there. Booth Number G24. Feel free to drop by. And unless anything happen, I should be dropping by Sept 9 for the OIC night portrait event to hang out. For any interested party, you can just drop me a mail and i can bring the book along.

One more thing that is happening during the STGCC event is, they are going to show Godaizer on Sat 20 Aug. 12pm to 12.30pm. Godaizer is an independent animation project by Hillary Yeo. I was involved with doing the concept art for him when i just started my freelance career, years ago. For anyone that may be interested on what the project is about, you can drop by Godaizer Facebook fanpage or Godaizer.com for more details. Kun Rong featured in a Japanese Illustration magazine

Its an illustration magazine featuring alot of work processes as well as works from mainly japanese artists.

The kind of works are mainly MOE. Its only up to volume 5 now but seems to be pretty popular due to the funky look and very detailed tutorials and making-of.

Animax x OIC exhibition – Eeshuan and Annie Tan

Special thanks goes out to Animax + Japan Creative Centre + Fourskin for this wonderful collaboration. We hope this project for Animax will set the “pace” and “style” for our future collabs – being drawn together and celebrating the joy and passion for drawing!

Eeshaun vs Spooky Kintaro


eeshaun (b. 1980) is a self-taught Singaporean artist and illustrator. Since starting gardensilly in 2005, he has created artworks and illustrations for Adidas, Nike, The Discovery Channel, onedotzero (UK), The Singapore Fashion Festival 2006, Zouk, IdN, Pictoplasma and the San Diego Comic Conference. In 2008, he was commissioned with FARMWORK, Designact and RE:act by Design Council Singapore as curatorial leads to design the Singapore Pavilion, ‘Singapore Supergarden’, for the prestigious 11th Venice Architectural Biennale. His largest public art installation, ‘Move!’, was commissioned by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore in 2009. He teaches at the School of Technology for the Arts in Republic Polytechnic, Singapore.

The Artwork:
The artwork is inspired by Japanese horror artist Shigeru Mizuki, who popularised the horror manga and anime series Gegege No Kitaro and was a master of the ‘yokai’ genre (Japanese supernatural creatures).

Annie vs Paradise Kiss


A Singapore-based illustrator with an aesthetic inclination of everything weird and wonderful, Annie Tan’s works have ranged from fashion, advertisement, documentary and editorial illustrations, as well as character designs and comic strips. It is through her unique graphic interpretation that Annie portrays her bold ideals, making each piece of artwork a deeply personalized commitment to perfection.

The Artwork:
It is a playful rendition of the manga and anime series “Paradise Kiss” through the artist’s eye. Annie uses three of the characters, Caroline, Miwako Sakurada and Isabella, and their stories for composition. The artwork creates a world of Victorian grandeur, with a sense of quirkiness.

Animax x OIC exhibition – Ray Toh and Mindflyer

It was wonderful seeing how the various OIC illustrators interpret the animation titles given by Animax. The result was pretty amazing! Check out the original animations on Animax and see our interpreted artwork at the JCC!

Ray Toh vs InuYasha


Ray Toh aka Torei, is a Singapore-based freelance concept artist and Illustrator who have been involved with a wide range of projects, ranging from game concept, comic, animation design to advertising illustration. His clients include, Radical Publishing, Samsung, Compaq, Sony Ericsson, Subaru, Toyota, Tequila / TBWA , Iris Singapore, Volta and many more. Ray Toh is still trying to broaden his knowledge and skills to explore more interesting ways to present images as well as to tell stories. He believes in always re-looking at what he has on hand and re-thinking what is possible.

The Artwork:
The idea behind the re-designed protagonist InuYasha is inspired by the character’s arrogance and personality from the manga and anime series. As a demon who travels a lot, InuYasha was re-designed by Ray to resemble a vagabond. He carries all his magical equipment with him on his travels before he is trapped and sealed by Kikyo.

Mindflyer vs Fairy Tail


Michael is a veteran artist/ Illustrator working in Singapore under the name Mindflyer ( 小飞人 ). Since starting his own studio in 1999, Michael has won several awards for his original style. Always eager to push the envelope, he seeks to give each client a unique re-interpretation to express their message. Besides painting and exhibiting his work, he is a founding member of the illustrators’ group “The OICsingapore”, where he is actively involved in engaging and challenging young illustrators.

The Artwork:
Hiro Mashima’s manga and anime series Fairy Tail is magical, sexy , action-packed, funny and full of flying ‘things’. Mindflyer seeks to capture the spirit and crazy vibes by jazzing up some of his favorite characters, especially “Happy” the flying cat.

Animax x OIC exhibition – MrB and Elvin

This is what OIC is all about. Singapore’s illustrators jamming together regardless of style or technique- working together to make the illustrating community more interesting and vibrant. If all we care about is who draws/ paints better – then we would have missed the point! Let’s just draw,celebrate and spread good drawing vibes!

Mr B vs Samurai Champloo


Ben Qwek (MRB) is a self-proclaimed visual stylist. Growing up in cosmopolitan Singapore where cultures converge, his influences are diverse. Aspiring to be a multi-disciplinary artist, he is always striving to create distinctive visuals that fuse various influences and design communications. A crossover artist from the world of graphic design and street art, MRB straddles between mainstream illustration and adding a street edge to his projects. Random juxtaposition of cultures, influences and styles ranging from Japanese Manga to contemporary art are what describes Ben Qwek’s vivid art and ideas.

The Artwork:
Samurai Champloo’s style has been a perfect marriage of both Japanese and Western influences. As an anime series set in feudal Japan with contemporary urban Hip-Hop elements and music, Samurai Champloo is one such juxtaposition of cultures – a trait very close to the heart of Ben, a crossover artist with both graphic design and street art background.

Elvin vs Fullmetal Alchemist


Elvin Ching aka Zeropointfive has contributed illustrations to the Singapore/UK collaborative effort – A6 Future, the opening & closing ceremony programmes for the first Youth Olympics Games in Singapore as well as a comic story in the comics anthology Liquid City Vol. 2 published by Image Comics. His next venture will be an educational series of children’s comics / storybooks to be published soon by P3.

The Artwork:
As Fullmetal Alchemist revolved around the power of resurrection and immortality, he found inspiration from Michelangelo’s painting ‘The Creation of Adam’ from the Sistine Chapel. But instead of Adam and God, we have Edward Elric and his own mechanical arm reaching for the Philosopher’s Stone, a legendary catalyst to resurrection. Edward’s mechanical arm represents Edward’s own stubborn and independent stance as a man of science versus his own personal struggles with faith. Around him, his brother Alphonse Elric’s dual bodies unravel and gravitate towards the power of the philosopher’s stone, while in the back, the nation of Amestris awaits its ultimate fate.

Animax x OIC exhibition at the Japan Creative Centre

Manga & Anime! Japan
A journey from the history to modern day inspirations

Date: 16 Oct 2010 – 12 Nov 2010

Animax collaborates with the OICsingapore to create anime-inspired illustrations based on Animax’s top shows. From all-time favorites like InuYasha & Fullmetal Alchemist to new hits like Fairy Tail, the creative and artistic interpretation of these anime shows by 8 illustrators are displayed at Japan Creative Centre as part of the Manga & Anime! Japan – A journey from the history to modern day inspirations exhibition.

Visitors can vote for their favorite illustrations and post their comments on animaxtv.com for the duration of the exhibition. Enter a unique code provided by Japan Creative Centre to stand a chance to win an air ticket to Japan.

Animax will also launch t-shirts based on these 8 illustrations for sale from November, exclusively at Fourskin Singapore and Malaysia.

Anngee/ AG vs Nodame Cantabile


AG majored in illustration for her Visual Communications diploma and is now in Melbourne doing her BFA in Drawing. She finds inspiration from life, and is always trying to run a commentary of the world with her surreal, quirky drawings. Beside pursuing drawing, illustration and painting murals, AG keeps herself busy experimenting with film and art objects.

The Artwork:
A big fan of Tomoko Ninomiya’s Nodame Cantabile, Anngee pays her homage by capturing the fun and quirkiness of the characters from the original manga and anime, as well as injecting the love and passion they have for playing music into her interpretation.

Zid vs Bleach


Zid is a multi-disciplinary artist trained in the fine arts. He majored in painting and is currently delving into comic art and illustrations. His body of work converges two opposing ideas together to complement one another, such as traditional versus contemporary, analog emulating digital, as well as old beliefs and new ideas to express how he feels his generation is about: conflict of chaos and order.

The Artwork:
His entry based on protagonist Kurosaki Ichigo and the ‘Hollow’ counterpart that exists in him in anime and manga series Bleach embodies his viewpoint. Composed to resemble the King and Queen designs on poker cards, the work is as interesting as the opposing but interdependent yin-yang elements. When the Shinigami is in his human form, the Hollow form is the inverted antithesis and the reverse occurs as the Hollow form takes over. The style applied is a combination of traditional brush strokes from Eastern wall scrolls and raw collage technique found during the pop art era. The overall raw look is an inspiration from Robert Rauschenberg’s transfer drawing.

OMG! Animax+OICsingapore+Fourskin!!

Yes!!! OICsingapore T-shirts are coming in November after our exhibition at the Japan Creative Centre/ Kyoto International Manga Museum’s exhibtion titled ” Manga & Anime! Japan “.

Thanks to Tracy and her team from Animax for thier support of OIC and for inviting OIC to participate in this project. Not forgetting Jon and the Fourskin team for the T-shirt production!

Thanks also to the artists who believed, participate and supported me all the way to make this project beautiful! ( AnnGee, Annie Tan, MrB, RayToh, Zid, Zeropointfive and Eeshuan )

Looking forward to the opening of the show!  Can’t wait to show the artworks soon!! :D
