The Singapore Showcase is an Underscore special edition platform showcasing the works of Singapore’s creative disciplines through mediums of publication, film, website and exhibition, designed by Hjgher and curated by esteemed Japanese curator, Yoichi Nakamuta.

The publication features more than 100 Singaporean creatives, ranging from fields of art, design, music and photography, including architecture, interior, product, graphic, illustration, interactive, animation, fashion, art, photography and music.

The theme, Uncover was established for Singapore, describing the beginning of a creative culture that has grown over the years with little history, but a freedom and hunger for experimentation. The focus is on the future, rather than its history, that defines Singaporeʼs design culture as a work in progress, inviting greater things to come. Says editor-in-chief, Justin Long, “We have the freedom to be who we want to be. We hold the power to decide our own future, not only for ourselves, but for future generations to come.”

With an irreversible scratch-and-see gold hardcover, Underscore invites the reader to scratch and uncover an original curation of Singapore’s creative culture, with over 280 pages of visuals and interviews.

Creative Cultures: The Singapore Showcase publication is printed by Dominie Press and officially distributed in Singapore by BooksActually.

Underscore Magazine

Underscore is an independent magazine with thematic content attuned to a simple rhythm; quality of life. Conceived and designed by award winning studio Hjgher and published by H/Publishing, Underscore is a platform derived to underline or highlight simple values that are important but neglected in our everyday lives.

Held by the common intrinsic values of Authenticity, Quality, Integrity and Honesty, Underscore was developed specifically for the audience in mind, addressing media channels of traditional publishing, online media, product design and placement, and event exhibitions to communicate through all senses of the audience for a complete and fulfilling experience.

Another definition of underscore is background music. A carefully selected soundtrack accompanies each issue to complete the entire experience, and is available on the website for download.

Portraits of children and their aspirations

Late last year, we were commissioned by a charity to produce some portraits for the Trans Centre (a non-profit organisation for children from broken homes.)

The aim of the project was to help the children envision what they would like to be in future and drawing a portrait of them in their “dream role” to motivate them. The portraits were then presented to the children as small part of an aid package.

This is the 1st time we produce so many portraits based on photos and some verbal description of the kid’s personalities. We prefer to draw from life and in person.
Mindflyer was in charge of liaison and co-ordination ( esp since there are 5 of us involved- we have to set a size and format template to ensure consistency )

Those who participated  also include-  AnnGee,  Shyam, SanSan and Twisstii.
Special thanks to Wei Wei Yeo ( The National Art Gallery, Singapore )  for the introduction and recommendation .

The Zine Mosh by GRAPHEME zine lab

Grapheme Zine Lab is brewing at Goodman Arts Centre. Expect an experimental space where anyone can come craft a zine, learn book-making techniques, hang with our analog pets, or browse/buy an array of books and zines.

Zine by Budi Wijaya

New zine by Twisstii about stray cats

The Zine Mosh; our Lab opening, is an exhibition-cum-distribution experiment: 1 part tangible creativity, 2 parts freedom of self-expression. A heap of micro-publishing, a liberal sprinkling of the DIY ethos.
Join us as we serve up independent book/zine forms of all shapes, sizes & contents. All manners of unique, locally-created zines & artist’s books will be on exhibition & for sale. Zentai. Transient places now demolished. Haight-Ashbury free love. Polka-dotted bats.
Partaking in our vision and contributing works are an assortment of comrades, ranging from FALSE independent fashion anarchists Le Messie & Amanda S, to illustrators Twistii, Zxerokool and Sheryo, comic-book artist Troy Chin—and you, if you so wish.
Make a zine, bring it down, and you can sell it in our Lab. Or simply turn up with curiosity in your maw and leave satiated, pockets full of zines, inducted into the orders of indie-publishing.
Feat. Bani Haykal & Co. (experimental music), Polarity Press (zine distro), & Word Forward (performance poets)

Time:
Saturday at 8:00pm Sunday at 2:00am

HP TouchPad launch/ OIC Portraits After Dark @ Klapsons The Boutique Hotel

We were invited to the special event for HP’s TouchPad launch at the Klapsons The Boutique Hotel on 26th July. Due to the smaller space allocated to us – we have to be very selective and handpick 12 “spartans”/artists to show the crowd what a portrait event by OIC is all about!
We had a wonderful time pleasing the crowd! First time we had such an intense 1 to 1 kind of session and we were very pleased that even our new comers Xin Nie and Sharon took the challenge very well! There were also many queries about OIC and what we do.
We hope to do more such sessions especially with brands like HP that believes in giving local talents opprotunities to shine.
Thanks to Hsu Wei and the HP team, Pat Law and the GoodStuph crew , Edelman, PMG Asia and of course our specially handpicked team from OIC that make this event fun and memorable!
