Sei-ji Rakugaki aka James has this unique style to simplify a very complicated scene into something very simple, squiggly, refreshing and “poetic”. So I asked him how he creates his watercolour drawings which he can whip out very quickly.
From Seiji:
- subject matter is the playground downstairs at my flat.
I used my Lamy fountain pen to draw the lines first .
I add in the tones with brush pen.
For the playground, it’s usually primary colors cos it is red/blue yellow plastic.. so i used a highlighter and some magic marker to add it in.
after the piece is done…
i wreck the drawing by pouring brown ink over it and see how it flows..

mf: I like the “wreck”ing part ( I may even try it ! )…. must try it someday!
The next sketchwalk with Urbansketchers will be at Joo Chiat – interesting shophouse architecture + food haven!! The 2 lethal combination for any Singapore flava sketchwalks. Do join in the wholesome sketching fun!
